Can you take algebra 2 and geometry at the same time
Doubling up shouldn't be at the expense of another academic area , though. In other words, the second science course should not replace another academic course in most circumstances. It should typically be done in addition to the other academic areas unless there is a scheduling conflict or a very good reason not to take another subject area instead. Whether it's a future history major or even a linguistics major, students who have a clear sense of what they want to study in college typically want as much exposure to the subject matter as possible.
If it means doubling up in history for one year or even pursuing two different languages for all four years of high school, the student will be more prepared for a college major in that subject matter. Doubling up can seem impressive at first glance, but if it's done to avoid another subject matter colleges can easily see through that. If the student is truly struggling in an academic subject matter, doubling up the following year in another area is reasonable. But remember that even though colleges have minimum requirements for how many years students should take all five academic subject matters math, English, science, history, and foreign language , they would prefer to see all areas represented for all four years of high school if possible.
That's because your high school curriculum will often mirror the course load in your first year of college. If the course load is too heavy or time-consuming, students can take a course over the summer. If the student's motivation is to get ahead in math, oftentimes private schools run a summer session to advance ambitious students in the subject matter.
Just make sure your math department will approve the summer course before signing up for it. Students can also take a full-fledged college course at a local community college or university for a grade and credit. Getting an A in a college course over the summer carries a lot of weight in the admissions process.
I always tell students that if they get an A in a college course, they should send an official transcript to the colleges where they apply. In the end, doubling up is impressive, but it comes with risk and sacrifice. Speak to your teachers, department chairs, and your college counselor of record about whether you are a good candidate to pursue this.
We will be doing this, both together. I am doing it for a different reason. We will be going through both books over the next year or two. I am not sure if we will do a few days in one then a few days in the other or both on the same day.
I teach at a STEM university and see students all the time who had no calculus in high school. I don't know about acceptance to BYU. If he wants to do anything with computers, he will need a lot of math, and I would definitely try to make it through an easy version of calculus - BUT never at the expense of algebra!
The biggest problem for students are less than solid algebra 1 skills, and it causes them to fail intro science - not a lack of calculus. We have done alg2 and geometry partly overlapping and did use the summer to stretch out the work load. That's interesting.
Then pre Cal and Cal. I hadn't thought about not doing alg 2 right after 1. Thank you for the other consideration! How can you forget? A good geometry course will need a lot of algebra 1. DD has needed linear equations, systems of linear equations, quadratic equations, as well as systems of linear and quadratics in her geometry course. With one of my sons, we did geometry double time and then moved on to algebra 2 finishing by the end of 10th.
I think it is easy to complete a geometry course in less than a school year esp. Another option you might look at is the ability to take concurrent courses. This has been our most successful way to accomplish a math sequence leading to the ability to take Calculus 1 in the fall of the freshman year at university.
After completing Algebra 2, our sons enroll in college algebra the highest level for concurrent students , then trig, then either statistics or calculus 1 at our CC Calculus 1 does not transfer for the calculus needed for engineering so it transfers as an elective.
Unless one doesn't mind spending an extra year, a student seeking an engineering major and probably some of the other STEM majors should be prepared for calculus 1 when entering university. Unfortunately there are many students who aren't ready either developmentally or foundationally for that and need to take an extra year or semester in order to work up to that point. I wouldn't rush a student who isn't ready for the next level.
But geometry is, in our experience, a great course to accelerate in order to get a student into a certain sequence.
Thank you! This is for the state high school that works with the CC. I do not know if we can do to the CC ourselves and pay per course. But to get the state to pay for it, you have to go through the state high school as I understand. I wish there was a way to do just a course or 2 without paying for it out of pocket.
Having just gone through both the books I had originally planned on using for these two classes I can say the Geometry did use some Algebra, but basic stuff mostly what was learned in pre-algebra. WHen working the Algebra 2 text I was totally lost and had to keep referencing the Algebra 1 book.
We will be using different curricula for these because of this as well as many other problems with the text. Of the 3 I have looked at so far all uses simple Algebra in Geometry. Natalia Nayali 08 Dec I really like Soflo SAT tutoring. My daughter has improved in her SAT scores.
Also her tutor in very responsive and smart and kind. I also think their customer service is great. I would recommend them blindly!! Luis Carlos Fonseca 08 Dec I am confident this is a great option for my daughter. Tara Henry 07 Dec We've truly had a wonderful experience with SoFlo. My daughter actually 'enjoys' her tutoring sessions - crazy!! After just a couple sessions her PSAT score increased by 80 points.
Mindy Wright 26 Aug I don't typically write recommendations because it is perception and every child is different…. The tutors at SoFlo are highly qualified in the subjects they Financially affordable and in-line with other tutors. Adam was able to match our son up with Christian who is an excellent tutor…he is responsive, via text, email or phone. SoFlo is willing to go above and beyond to set up personalized tutoring, and Christian has been very flexible with our schedule which I appreciate!
I received a call from my son's english teacher suggesting we move him to AP English, he is already dual enrolled and taking other AP classes Thank you SoFlo read more. Alice Cain-Moore 23 Dec Great personalized service. My daughter improved her score by points. My god daughter by points. Better results than most of the other companies out there. Thanks Adam! Leo Weisberger 29 Nov I had searched and spoken with many test prep companies but they were the best. They answered all my messages and respond to my calls very promptly.
Also there were no contracts so I gave them a shot even though I had not heard of The founder Adam was knowledgeable about SAT prep and friendly on our initial phone call and getting started was easy, just filling out a simple form.
They had my son Greg take a diagnostic test to gauge his initial strengths and weaknesses. From the diagnostic we had a very strategic approach to prep and there were clear goals and direction.
From there a polite young tutor reached out and began scheduling test prep sessions. My son is always very busy because he is on the soccer team, but our tutor Charlie was very flexible and scheduled sessions at my son's convenience. We met with Charlie once a week for two hours over the course of about 3 months. I was able to track my son's progress because he was always doing SAT practice tests for homework.
His score was steadily climbing from week to week, and we were confident that he was going to improve his SAT score. After taking the SAT we decided to pause sessions thinking that we should wait until we see how Greg did on his test. Adam completely understood and did not pressure us to continue sessions. When the scores came out Greg improved over points and scored a on the SAT. Tutoring is the best money I've ever spend and every step of the way SoFlo has been great to work with.
I'm so appreciative! Michael Light 18 Mar With their help my ACT score went up to a 29 and I got the full bright futures scholarship. I recommend them to everyone and swear by their tutoring method. The best ACT tutor in South Florida!
